Refracted Panorama: molecular scenes from beyond the horizon

If a panorama depicts an all-encompassing view across a landscape, what does a refracted panorama offer?

Graduating artists from Northumbria University’s BA and MFA programmes suggest ways of seeing through and beyond the horizon of the human; views from elsewhere, broken sightlines, experiences that move across time and space from embodied knowledges that alter our ways of being.

Refracted Panorama: molecular scenes from beyond the horizon celebrates an upcoming generation of artists, marking the ongoing collaboration between Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and Northumbria University.

Imagine. Learn. Create.

This exhibition is the culmination of three years of student-artist learning on Northumbria’s BA (Hons) Fine Art degree and two years on our MFA programme. We are proud to work in partnership with Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, whose experts have contributed to our BA and MFA programmes for over a decade as part of our BxNU partnership.

We absolutely value our relationship with Baltic, and also share its belief that art goes beyond galleries: it occupies and is felt in our city, landscapes, and buildings where we learn, live, work, and play. Art informs how we understand the world, how we reflect our individual and collective pasts and how we challenge and celebrate our present moment.

Art also informs our digital lives, enabling us to share our stories. On BA and MFA degrees students become critical thinkers and experienced makers. With a broad range of modules, the courses combine theory and practice to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed for employment in an extensive variety of roles. Examples include community arts, teaching, curating, arts management, assisting artists, gallery or studio management, business, marketing, and more.

These degrees are dynamic, interdisciplinary, and address real world challenges, which students can tailor to ensure they have the best possible foundation for future study and continued success.

We hope you enjoy the work of our new graduates, and we wish them well in future lives in Gateshead, Newcastle, the region and the world!
